BIBLE-IN-SCHOOLS.

AND THE TEACHERS' INSTITUTE

A general meeting of the Wauarapa branch of the N.Z. Educational Institute was held in tho Technical; School oh Saturday morning.. Mr I<\ L. Combs (Mauriceville), president,, occupied the chair, and about thirty members were present. According, to notice the president moved : ' 'That this meeting of teachers isopposed to . Bible in schools on the following grounds (a) that : religious' questions from which it is impossible to separate scripture teaching are still in a controversial state; (b) that under the existing conditions influencing promotion of teachers, it would add one more indirect and improper agency to those already militating against straightforward advancement on a basis of professional merit and desert; (c) that in the case of some teachers it would violate those rights of conscience by common consent scrupulously conceded to every otliyr. member of the community."

lii seconding the motion, pro forma, Mr Wt H. Jackson .suggested that the mover should alter Lia motion to read: "That this pieollng of teachers is opposed to the programme of the Bible-in-Schools Leigue," and that the question con Id then be debated on more general lines. Mr Jackson expressed him self in favour of the Nelson system of scripture tea thing in tlie public schools. With the consent of tLo meeting the president altered his motion as suggested. After an hour's discussion, in which most of those present took part, the motion was carried by a. four-fifths majority.
