WATERSIDfcRS TURN DOWN PROPOSALS.

WELLINGTON, Last Night

The waterside workers held a meeting this afternoon, to discuss a new basis of settlement submitted by representatives of the farmers; It is understood that negotiations were begun last evening between representatives of the Federation of Labour and several representative members of the farmers now in barracks, with a view to arriving at an amicable and speedy settlement of the dispute. It is understood tha£ the farmers' representatives submitted as a basis of "settlement an* agreement which should include the existing agreement, with the following additional terms:—Thai all disputes on minor points he submitted to a committee composed of the representatives from each side in the dispute for their decision, and in the case of their failure to agree, that the point in dispute be decided by some third party, to be agreed upon by both committees ; that in the case of any other industrial dispute arising which would involve a sympathetic strike on the part of the waterside workers' unions the Waterside Workers' Union agree that they will take no action In the matter of a strike unless the employer or employers in such industrial dispute refuse to submit same to the decision of an arbitration tribunal similarly formed and constituted as the tribunal to which they have agreed to refer their dispute ; work to be immediately resumed under the present agreement. The agreement (it is provided) is to remain in force for a term of three years. The union officials decline to make any statement as to the result of to-day's meeting, hut it -is understood the men decided to stand firm and declino to accept the proposals.
