THE POLICE FORCE.
One of the most ugly aspects of the industrial disturbances in Wellington has been the apparent indifference displayed oy the regular police fofte when life and property were imperilled by the rioters. The fact lias been established that hundreds of hooligans were engaged in. the mfflWerous pastime of stone and brick-throw-ing. And yet the police, mounted and on foot, succeeded in arresting only about half-a-dozerf offenders. They have held a meeting and repudiated the imputations of neglect of duty cast against them. But what have fhey done in the -way of preserving law and order? What were they doing when the hooligans took charge of the city? Why were they cheered by the mob? These are questions to which the public will require an answer. The police are reported to have asked for an inquiry. It is to be hoped, for the sake of the reputat||p: of the .force, that this will be granted, and Hiat the men in blue will be afforded an opportunity of explaining their inactivity. There is an uneasy feeling throughout the country over the incidents of the past week.
