OUNEDIN, Last Night. It is officially stated by Mr Belcher that a request was made to fill the positions of seven firemen, who were leaving, the Maori at Lyttelton yesterday, and successful efforts, were made in Dunedin to secure the number required. The men went forward by train to-day to join the Maori at Lytteitpm. The opinion is held in. It is pointed out that should the running of the ferry steamers be stopped, any person who might receive an urgent call from' one Island to the other, to visit a sick bed or the death-bed of a friend or relative, or attend funeral obsequies, he would be barred from reaching his and then there is al% the 6erious inconvenience which will arise, should the passenger and mail traffic from the Bluff to Auckland be interfered with by the enforced laying up of the ferry boats. Furthermore, it is asserted that as these steamers are not carrying cargo, their running cannot materially affect the position of the strikers.
