The Melbourne Cup wil bo run today. ' At presont it looks very much as it tho New Zealand Cup (meeting may be adversely affected by the watersiders' strike, as a very large percentage of the North Island horses have been held up at Wellington. It is possible, of course, that a settlement may be arrived at in time to permit of the horses being shipped. south, or that, in the event of no settlement being arranged, they may be. shipped by free labour. Many owners, however anxwrns to ®on«i their charges to the cup meeting., win be chary of risking valuable animal* bei'ii* , dam " '^" A in any way", <n yjew of possible' trouble at the wharf. Every sportsman in the Dominion will wish to see the horses shipped- south and; landed safely at Lyttelton. The horses sent . south at once will probably not be at their best, as it generally takes a day or twd to get over the sea trip. At all events the big handicap will be robbed of much of its interest if such horses as Bronze, Haskayne, Expect, Undecided and Co. will not be included in the field. Tho position isunique, in the turf history of New Zealand, and the question is the chief topic otf conversation amongst tho sporting fraternity of the Domini°u' . . , , Undecided is reported to have put up a good gallop, and has been solidly supported for the New Zealand I Cup. This would paint to the con-• -actions of Undecided being satisfied iw +'*<* horses will be shipped south. F E Jones t) X pd« the JtowAikoff gelding in the Cup ik§&. ..,. ... _ Alecto has been sold to a Welling- 1 ton sportsman. The Sir Laddo mare has thrown off all signs of soreness, ; and will be placed in active conimis- ; sion straight away. Excellent nominations have been received for the Feilding Jockey Club's spring meetings E. Berry will have the mount on Sinapis in the New Zealand Cup. With such a clever rider, the St. Ambrose, mare may be expected to figure prominently in tho. big event. . The Eototawai horses Reputation and Consultation havd bt?i?n scratched for all engagements at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Mr Bidwill evidently does not wish to run the risk of sending his horses south. It is reported that the Sir Laddo gelding Braeburn is on the sale. list. Ariam is mentioned in so-ne quarters as likely to nui well if she sees the post in the New: Zealand Cup. The .Merriwee mare looked a p*r"' fcur * > «t and raft a sterling race in the Wellington Handicap. Emperador and La Eeina will probably divide favouritisin in the New Zealand Cup. The Auckland contingent are very confident regarding La Keina's chance.
Warstep is much fancied by southern sporting men for tho Stewards' Handicap. She was responsible a few days ago!.for one of the ibest gallops over put up at Riccarton, and may lie relied upon to keep Bandiera and Co. very busy. Anna Carlovna aiade amends for her defeat in the Caulfield Cup by •winning the Melbourne Stakes on Saturday. Provided he trains on all right, Piriform, the Highden oolt by Bolniform —Parera, will surprise a mimlxu* of good judges who saw his effort in tho Weliesley Stakes, if he does not t urn out one of the best of the seasan's two-year-olds. Pariform is a handsome colt, all quality, and was very .unlucky to bo beaten. At the start lie had all sorts of bad luck, but when he got clear he settled down to hi,9 task in good style, and would probably have caught Hymettius had the race been five furlongs instead of f 0*111",
The victory of Tatterley in the..Naiinai Handicap at Trelitham .has Gained him a 31b penalty, for the O.J.C. Stewards' Handicap, which brings his weight up to 8.3. Tatterley is now one of the first fancies for the C.J.C, Stewards' Handicap. While riding at tho Wavorley meeting, J. Conquest had his neck badly .cut by the tapes of the starting machine. The man in charge of the barrier was removing the cords as the race was in progress, but failed to get them out of the way in time, with the result that the Auckland horseman, who was in the lead at the time, got them round his neck, having a lucky escape from a serious accident. Those who witnessed the running of Addnought at Wellington, where he ran first and third, pick the sotn of Addington out aa likely to run forward in tho Onchunga Steeplechase, in which ho has been let off lightly with 9.13. The southern jockey A. Oliver goes north for the first day of the A.R.C. ■spring meeting, and will ride Mr Lowry's pair, Soltano and Bcbrikoiff, in their engagements. Already trainers are securing boxes at Auckland in anticipation of a rush at Christmas time. R. O'Donnell, private trainer to the Messrs Stead Bros., has booked six B. Deeley did not'Toso any time in getting away to Riccartom after the Wellington "meeting, and left for tho south within a couple of hours of riding Patronalo in the Nainai Handicap at Trentham on Monday. Messrs/ Stead Bros', coit Good Might was taken to Wellington, but it was only for educational purposes, for he was not ■started at the meeting. He is .stated to be something out of the ordinary, and will bo well backed first time he starts.
