ATTITUDE OF SEAMEN.
WILL COME OUT IF FREE LABOUR IS EMPLOYED. MR YOUNG DEFENDED. (By Tekuraphr—Prm Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Tlie meeting of seamen called for noon to-day was attended by some 54-5 persons. Four resolutions were carried unanimously, the most impoitant declaring that the seamen would come out ijj any attempt is made to work the cargo or coal anywhere with free labour. Confidence was also expressed in the action of the local secretary, Mr W. T. Young. The meeting lasted two and a-half bears, ° Tho resolutions are as followr (1) That this mass'meeting of members of the. Seamen's Union ; conveys fraternal; greetings to imd sympathy- with- the watemders now fighting for their juet rights, 'eiid resolves that should 'scab' labonr ha employed at working cargo on the wharves or vessels, or at bunkering ships, our members aro to at once give twenty-four hours' no-
tice to leave at the final port of discharge, in accordance with the Shipping Act and clause 23 of the agreement with the steamship owners, and under no circumstances are they to work cargo or- bunker coal with "scab" labour, this being the policy followed by our secretary (Mr Young) and the Wellington executive since the commencement of the strike we heartily endorse their action in the dispute. (2) It being necessary that the men employed at the lighthouses and their wives and families be supplied with provisions, this mass meeting of members of tho Seamen's. Union resolves that the crew of the Government s.s. Hinemoa be allowed to continue in their employment, so long as the vessel is exclusively employed at such lighthouse work. Should she be employed, at. any other work, the crew are to give 24 hours' notice to leave at their final port of discharge (Wellington). ~ (3) Tliat we, the members of tho Seamen's,. T. Young, eTCher as president of the United Federation of La'bour or secretary of the Seamen's Union, but this branch has every confidence in him as president of the Unitedi Federation of Labour and also as the Wellington branch of tho Seamen's Union, and ; hope and trust he will hold both positions to the bitter end.
