BATONS FOR "SPECIALS."
A small body of Red Federationists in Masterton, encouraged by certain illadvised comments oil the sending of special constables to Wellington to ;assist in maintaining law and order, have publicly denounced a local tradesman for having manufactured batons fqr the use of the constables •should occasion require. The tradesman in', question can rest assured that .nine-tenths of the community will apr 'pfaud his? action.; in fulfilling, a '.business order,.lie not only xlid what a -business man* serving the public, is expected to do, but he provided a contingent with the protection which events have since proved they badly needed. Had the special constables been provided wiffi firearms, there might have been some cause for complaint ; but to arm them with batons, in the same way that the regular police force is armed, is a perfectly reasonable precaution. No person who is orderly need have the slightest fear. The only man who fears the mounted man with the baton, is the one who creates disturbances, throws bricks and stones, and otherwise misbehaves himself.
