The non-arrival of the usual consignment created considerable consternation. The suspension of tho AucklandPaeroa steamer service means a serious matter, especially for tho upper gold-iieldis district'. _ A shortage of potatoes is not expected, local supplies being available. The coal supplies held are not too extensive, but ft is ivheved there is enough oxl hand t:i mining pumping machinery foundries, atid factories going for weeks.
