Hiat this meeting of reprcsentat i ye tanners of Eltliam and surrounding district pledges itself to del all possible to assist in any direction in handling our produce and necessities by providing, labour, special constables,' .horses, etc.; that this meeting deplores the calamitous position, that the present strike has brought about in relation to '; the nMiona!| protljiuition 1 i:om fanning and other industries of/tlie Domihion, and which, if not speedily ended, must cause irreparable loss to the whale community, and calls upon the Government to trke Mich action
as is necessary to protect the welfare of the producers and all dependent upon them;"( 3) that in view of the widespread paralysing of all industry and consequent financial losses caused by strikes such as that now in progress, and the similar 0110 of lust year, this meeting urges upon Che Government the immediate roeessity of introducing such legislation as will render their recurrence impossible, and thus prevent what may otherwise at some time prove a national disaster.
At th© conclusion of the meeting, a number offered their services as loaders and mounted special constables. The dairy company also passed a resolution condemning the action of watersiders in blocking trade, and offering to doi their utmost to persuade farmers to volunteer for personal service to protect free labour and handle produce. Storekeepers are limiting the amounts supplied to purchasers. Farmors fear the failure of the benzine and kerosene supply far power engines for milking machines, also a shortage of coal supplies at the freezing works. A number of volunteers are expected to leave for Wellington on Monday.
