APPEAL TO CIVIL SERVANTS. EIGHT HUNDRED SPECIAL CONSTABLES SWORN IN. WELLINGTON, Last Night. All the Civil Servante were to-day invited to perform service in protecting Government property, and the call for enrolment as special constables wa« responded to by a very large proportion of the men in the offices. The Government Buildings are lit up all round, and patrols guard the various Government officee. About 800 special constables were sworn in this afternoon, and more to-night. To-morrow there will he about a thousand available for duty. The mounted men are not on duty to-night. It was reported that an attempt was to be made to work the Bimutaka's cargo to-night, hot the vessel waa not brought in, and everything about the wharves is quiet at 10 p.m. It is now stated that during the Jervois Quay melee one striker was shot in the neck while mixed up with a constable.

With one hand the striker had pinned the constable's baton hand, and with the other he was holding a burning fuse under the horse's nose. Other men were crowded round the horseman, who, apparently finding himself in difficulties, reached across with his left hand to his holster, drew a revolver, and fired. The name of lli6 casualty 1s hot ascertainable. It is difficult to get reliable details of the various disturbances continually springing up. To a large extent the crowds seem composed of onlookers, including many women and children. The constable who was injured in the affray at Whitecombo and Tombs, is reported to be in a serious condition.
