A CALL TO ARMS.
RESPONSE OF- WAIRARAPA.
VOLUNTEERS LEAVING FOB, WELLINGTON. In response to tliecall for volunteers to proceed to Wellington, to act as special constables, about & hundred names of young -man. were secured in the Wairarapa yesterday. A portion of the contingent will leav& with their hocses by., special train, this morning, and others will follow to-morrow. In addressing a number of the volunteers on the Carterton show* grounds yesterday, Mr. ±L Morrison,, president of the Wairarapa branch of the Farmers' Union, stated that there' had been a ready response to the apr peal made, notwithstanding, that far,mers were very btusy. and dairymen: 'were engaged at milking.. The first contingent would leave in the morning) and others would follow, (applause). There was an unlimited, supply of horses available.. The offices of the secretary of the Union at Masterton would be open 3ay. and night, and volunteers would, be en-* rolled there, or with representatives of the Union in the Lower . Valley. The men proceeding to 1 Wellington., would be paid 10s per day, besidatheir keep. It was eminently,, desirable that law and order should ba maintained. J Mr W. Howard Booth referred to the seriousness of the position. Hepointed out that the holdings up. of. shipping would spell ruin to ni&ny of the dairymen and .small, settlers.. He urged the people of.. the. district, to use every effort to maintain the, services. Sir Walter Buchanan, M.P.,, who. was received with cheens, .referred tothe effective work done by the rough?riders of Queensland, and statedithafc, he had no doubt the volunteers fromi the Wairarapa would stand firmly, by law and order. They, would, besworn in as special constables, on their arrival at Wellington.. Mr H. Daysh, of, Martinborough, recited a patriotic poem, for which: hewas loudly cheered. Much enthusiasm was displayed; bythe volunteers, most of whom. ar& young men. Some of;them. have, rendered service in. : th;e mounted; rifltes , and Territorials.
