COMPETITIONS SOCIETY.

ANNUAL REPORT

The following is the annual report of the Mastortbn Competitions So* ciety, to be presented at the annual .general meeting on Wednesday, 29th In presenting a short report o£ 1913. competitions, your committee have pleasure in recording that this year's festival has proved the most successful yet held by the society. The balance-sheet shows increased revenue from all sources. The financial result of this year's competitions is not what your committee would prefer, but it must be remembered that the expenses and cost of ninning the festival have been much heavier than other years. The prize money was much larger, which no doubt assisted in attracting good entries.

The'choir competition was disappointing only from point of number of entries;. The fact that we had two visiting choirs, one from Napier r.nd one .from Pahiatua, greatly assisted in the success of the competitions. This society is much indebted to St. Matthew's Choir for competing and representing the town. In the vocal sections of the competitions, the local entries were disappointingly small, while in the elocutionary sections these were well represented. It is hoped that our local vocalists will; wake up and hold'' their own in all sections. '

In Messrs Montague iand Gregson, as judges, the committee were .fortunate. Mr Spencer Comptota proved an efficient supervisor, and Miss Hampton gave much pleasure to all in her artistic accompaniment work.

The committee wish to thank everyone' who in ainy way assisted to make the competitions such a success. To ensure next year's competitions 1 to be successful, your committee would urge the early issuing of 1914 syllabus. As some important changes are anticipated for 1914 it is hoped that there will be a good attendance of members at the annual meeting to thoroughly discuss matters. The past efficient services of Mr W. Gillespie who has been secretary xip till the end of our 1913 year, we wish to place on record.
