SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
AT LYTTELTON GAOL. 1
{By Telegraph — Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. This afternoon a serious accident occurred at the Lyttelton, gaol. A •number of prisoners were engaged in lifting a ladder over a gate, which gives access to the prison. A prisoner named Richard Raymond was on the inside of the entrance, assisting to get the ladder into position by means of a rope, when the ladder dislodged a heavy piece of masonry which, fell a distance of some 20 feet, striking Raymond on the head. Dr Newell was quickly in attendance, and after rendering first aid ordered the man's removal to the casualty ward. The injured man is in a very precarious condition, his skull being fractured, and little hope is entertained for his recovery. Later. The prisoner injured at the Lyttelton gaol this afternoon died at 10.30 to-night.
