■ The Poverty Bay Turf Club's spring meeting- opens at iGisborne tomorrow. Acceptances are up to the usual'standard, and a successful meetin"- is anticipated. The Masterton Racing Club is to be congratulated on the very great success which attended its spring meeting, and as the tote returns are most satisfactory, it \s safe to predict that the club's finances will be placed om a very sound footing. It is also anticipated that ,the stakes will be substantially increased for. the-autumn meeting. The opinion has been generally expressed that the Masterton Club "should have one of the best .meetings outside Metropolitan clubs, in the Dominion. With increased prize money, the local club may took forward to a very prosperous 1 time. '•■.■• "'.■-■.

The following remain in the Champion Plate, to be ran at Trentham en Monday next: — .Mr J. G. Duncan's eh. g. Los _Angelas, by San Francisco —La.Valiere, aged, 9.1. "Mr Highden's b. m. Bronze, by F!<-1d Battery—Our Lady, syrs, 8.13.

Sir Geo. Clifford's b. c. Autuiinus, by Treadmill—Gold Leaf, 4yrs, 9.0. Mr G. D. Greenwood's br. g. Emperador, by Charlemagne ll—Lady Wayward 11, 4yrs, 8.11. Mr F. Hall's b. f. Bleriot, by Soult —Elf, 4yrs, 8.9. Mr W. Nidd's b. f. Peroneal, by Achilles—Prelude, 4yrs, 8.9. Mr T, H. Lowry's b, c. Soltano, by Soult—Monoquil, 3yrs, 7.11. . Mr A. Alexander's ch;;f. Bonny Helen, by Boniform—Helen Portland, 3yrs, 7.6. < •• ~ . Mr F. .Hall's b. f. Merry Roe, by Roe, '3yrs, 7.6. Mr Kirkdaleybr. f. Immer, by Martian—Everlasting, 3yrs, 7.6. The field is the best that the Dominion can produce at the present time, and should all face the starter, the race should be worth going a long distance to witness, and no doubt record time for the race will be registered.

The scratching of. Sir Solo for the big Rioehrton event occasioned no surprise, as the effort of the Sir Laddo horse at Opaki was far from reassuring. He will no doubt be seen to advantage by the time the Xmas meetings come round. • '•■•'.. W. Young, with' three wins, was the most siiccessful horseman at the Masterton meeting. The crack lightweight, "W. Bell, scored once, as did V. Lee, T. Pritchard, W. Kirk and Mr James Bull, jun. T. Pritchard was .congratulated on his win, being his first clear victory since his prolonged retirement. Pritchard can go to scale at about 7.11, so that %e should secure plenty of good riding. It. Hatch, who has only been a public trainer for some little time, soon scored a win, Master Lup'in scoring -for the stable at first time of asking. Hatch was highly congratulated- on his initial effort.

The aged gelding Merrie Land,' which was sold at the Opaki meeting for £l2 10s, would appear cheap enough if only for the purposes' of a hack. The Merrie England gelding never got over a fall received at Clareville some two or three vears ago.

Old Overrate, now twelve years old, beat everything but the ninner in the Masterton Hack. Considering that he has done very littl-3 work, the officer gelding's performance was quite a good one. He will be competing in the selling races at +he Trontham meeting.

Awahou never looked better than at the Opaki meeting, where he won very easily. Lady Laddo, who ran second, may win a race soon if her unsound leg gives no trouble. Expect is once more in the boom. He looked on the big side at Masterton, but stayed on well, beating that game little mare Sinapig by a long neck. At the bottom of the straight the St. Ambrose mare looked all over a winner.

Big fields will be the general rule at Trentham on Saturday, and the punting fraternity may find it a hard task to select winners.

Bf>!):n will make his'debut a steeplechaser on Saturday, and will have the services of A. Julian. The question at present is whether Bollin will jump the big country. A. Oliver and B. Deeley, why last year carried all before them are at present both temporarily incapacitated. , >"ew Zealand horses' ha/e played a fairly prominent part in the decision of the Caulf ield Oup of late years. In 1907 Apologue finished second to Poseidon, -while in the following year the race was won l>y Maranui, and in 1909, Aboriginie dead-heated with Blue Book far first place. In 1911 Lady Medallist finished first, and twelve months ago ran second to Uncle Sam, while Royal Scotch, another New Zealander, filled, third place on this occasion. A -further payment for the New Zealand Oup falls due on Friday next.
