THE AGE OF FLIPPANCY.
(Prom the New York Weekly.) This seems to be the age of flippancy. For some unexplainable rea6on, people of the present day hold it as a matter of pride not only to hide their feelings but ,to try and! impress the public with the belief that they have no feelings at all. A girl thinks it rather a fine thing to put on a manner which will make the world suppose <she is quite destitute of either sentiment or" feeling on any subject under the sun; she is a-s deeply ashamed of being led into the betrayal of tenderness or deep feeling as if she were a schoolboy. Now, all this : £ likely to have a not altogether desirable result, and she who keeps on playing at being heartless and unfeeling may not improbably end by becoming what she pretends to be. Constant banishing of all emotion, continual scoffs at all is not practical and material and matter of fact, all these thinge tend to harden the sympathies and l suppress reality of feeling. Now, dear girls, have those of you who pride yourselves on your superiority of sentiment ever stopped to consider where you are allowing yourselves to be led? Have you thought what a singularly unlovely attribute flippancy is, and how determinedly you are making it your own? Has it . struck you how much easier it is to
