Mr George Nelson, one of the best known public men in Hawke's Bay, was tendered a complimentary social at Hastings last evening. A London cable announces the death of Mr Arthur Chamberlain, hrother of Mr Joseph Chamberlain, MP., and uncle of Mr Austen Chamberlain, M:P. He was prominent •in business'circles in Birmingham. -For a number of years he occupied the position of chairman of Kynoch's, L&T.-, &nd three other large trading firms. He was a keen free trader. Mr H. Williams, stationmaster at Gisborne, has received! notice of bis transfer to a similar poßitton at Napier, to take effect frcjn Che beginning, of December.
