DESTROYING OPOSSUMS.
In view of the recent controversev as to the destruction of opossums in New Zealand, it in interesting to note that the Victorian Government is ' strictly enforcing the law against the killing of the little animals, during the close season in that State, heavy. penalties boing inflicted on offenders. At tlio Korongvale (Victoria) Police Court last week Walter Beggs was proceeded against by John Henry Rowstfn, an inspector under the Game Act, on two charges of having unlawfully killed 100 opossums and 60 opossirus on the Loddon, near bernihurst, during the close season. The bench inflicted a fine of £3, with £25 damages, the value of the native game destroyed, with £6 os lid costs, in default four weeks' imprisonment on the first charge; and a fine of £2, with £l.) added, the value of the native game destroyed, in default four weeks' imprisonment on the second charge. The hearing of a charge against Angus Beggs of having aided • and abetted his brother in the destruction of the opossums was adjourned.
