THE LABOUR MARKET.
THROUGHOUT THE DOMINION. • (By Telegraph—Prat A ssociatum.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Reports in the Labour Journal issued to-day show that m the Wellington country districts Employment for unskilled labour has been plentiful,; and there has been an unsatisfied j demand for general farm hands. The opening of the dairying reason in Taranaki has meant a great demand for milkers in that district, especially for boys from 16 to 18. Boys of those ages are, however, difficult to get, although wages are good, the majority preferring work in town. Work, for unskilled labourers in Napier "is still scarce, "casuals" on the waterfront having had a bad month. The Auckland labour- office reports regarding unskilled labour that the position is not as good as one would lik?, as although there is now a demand for men used to farm 'work, a large number are calling who are not suitable for such work. Further, many of them are married men with families, and the wages paid for farm/ work are not sufficient to keep them. Referring to trade in Wellington, the Journal says that reports received from shopkeepers and manufacturers tend to show that there has been a noticeable improvement during the past month in some branches- However, it has been notably dull in the engineering and furniture trades. A quiet tone has prevailed, but business has been better tlian during August.
