Captain Braddell, of Masterton, is at present on a visit to Christchurch. Mr H. Kcay, assistant inspector of health for the Wairarapa, commences duty on Monday next. Mr T. R." Fleming, chief inspector of the Wellington Education Board, was in Masterton yesterday. Sir James Carroll, M.P., who has been health recuperating at Gisborne, has returned to Wellington. Dr Chesson, District Health Officer, paid an, official visit to Masterton on Monday to investigate a case of chicken-pox. Mr James Nash, the discoverer of Gympie, Queensland's richest goldfield, died recently at the age of 79 years. A London cable records the death of Professor James Stewart, P. 0., L.L.D., a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. Mr M. Lavery, solicitor, of Masterton, received advice yesterday thai his father, who has been seriously ill for some days, had passed away in Wellington. The death is by a Press Association message from Dunedin, of M* Robert Ewing, who was well-known .in banking circles in Otago. Mr F. Townsend, of the Nelson Police Force, and who is 60 well known in this town, visited Masterton'yesterday. Mr Townsend returns to Nelson to-day. Mr W. Ryan, the well-known Hastings horseman, has received news of the death of his mother, who passed away at her home in Auckland yesterday. The death is announced from Christchurch of Mr James Alfred Selfe, a well known sporting authority, and at one time secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Dr, F. JL Clarke, founder of the Christian Endeavour movement, will visit New Zealand in February, while ftn his way over to Sydney, where he will attend the fifth world convention; The remains of the late daughter of Mr and Mrs J. B. Henry, of Masterton, were interred in the Masterton cemetery yesterday afternoon, the funeral cortege being large and representative. Mr Samson, of Wellington,'will officiate as referee at to-morrow night's boxing contest in Masterton. Messrs G. W. Sellar tod W. Watson will act as time-keepers, while. Mr Hugh Morrison will announce the results.
The Masterton County Council adjourned for quarter of an hour yesterday out of respect for Mr J. B. Henry, manager of the Council's Bank, who had sustained a bereavement in the death of his daughter. At the meeting of the Masterton Workers' Mutual - Benefit Building Society, held on Monday evening, Mr ■JR. Krahagen was unanimously reelected chairman, and Mr J. P. Prentice vice-chairman for the ensuing year. The death occurred at an early hour on Tuesday morning of John Pearse, tne three-year-old son of Mr and Mrs J. Ackerman, of Lansdowne. The little fellow was stricken down suddenly, and his death has come as a severe blow to his parents. His Excellency the Governor and Lady Liverpool visited New Plymouth yesterday, and were the guests of the Mayor at an ofiicial luncheon. They visited the oil-wells and other places of interest, and afterwards left by special train for Stratford. A Hawera Press Association message states that the Governor and the Countess of Liverpool paid their first ofiicial visit to the town yesterday afternoon. They were presented with an address of welcome from the citizens. The party left later for Wa-, nganui. The Rev. Macdonald Aspland, who is to take over charge of the Emmanuel Congregational Church, Palmerston North this week, was farewelled by the members of the Cour-tenay-place Congregational Church, Wellington, on Monday. Mr Aspland was presented with a gold watch, and Mrs Aspland with a handsome cake-fitand and an artistio. epergne.
