PARLIAMENT.
In the Legislative Council yesterday, the Local' Elections and Polls Amendment Bill was read a third time , and passed. The Premier stated in the House of JRepresentatives, "in reply to Sir Joseph Ward, that he had hoped to lay the Dominion's position regarding^the Naval policy before the House • this week, but circumstances appeared to militate against that action. He stat«d further that the Government proposed dealing with the Customs' tariff this session. It must not be thought, however, they were going to revise the i. whole tariff. An Electoral Bill would be brought down, and the second ballot would be repealed. Tbe Public Works Statement was well on the way to completion, and should be down shortly.' The House then proceeded to discuss the Land Bill in odmmittee, and slow but effective progress was made tip till midnight. A division on clause 48 was taken . at 1.15 a.m., when the voting was: Ayes l 43, noes 18. A division was also called on clause .' 49, extending the right of purchase over settlement lands in certain cases. The clause was retained by 39 votes: to 2L '
