DEFENCE CONFERENCE.
The necessity for deliberation and care in the discussiop of great national problems was never -nore pointedly emphasised than in respect to the controversy over tho Defence Conference. A few days ago the ca"ble told us that the British Ministry, awing to local political developments, had dfecided to abandon the Defence Conference. .On the strength of this announcement, the Commonwealth Government, or some members of it, made statements which are calculated to provoke resentment from the British Cabinet. It now transpires that»tlie stony in regard to the abandonment of tho Conference is a political canard, manufactured by a small section of tHe Conservative party and press. While the indiscreet and precipitMc-
utterances of Common wealth Ministers, based upon unofficial statements, are to be strongly deprecated, the authors of tie oanard have placed themselves and the overseas dominions in a vory unpleasant .position. The whole unsavoury business serves to show that the question of Imperial .defence should be removed entirely from the realm of/party politics.
