Mr T. Dwan, of Wellington, was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M., of Palmerston Notrth, was in Masterton yesterday.
The Rev. A. Hopper is to be invited to remain a third year in tho Methodist charge at Grey town. Mr W. Lane has been appointed to succeed the late Mr Douglas as editor of the Auckland Herald. The death is announced by cable of Mr BaxterpfC-rfnerly tianager in London for the Bank of New Zealand. Mr Farquhar Gunn, a well-known resident of Oamaru, died a few days ago at the age of seventy-six years.
Mr Bishop, late of Hastings, has purchased the bakery business recently carried on at Martfnborough by Mr T. G. Howell.
Mr A. M. Myers, M.P. for Auckland East, will leave by the Vancouver steamer Niagara on November 25th en route for England.
Mr D. Monarty, General Secretary of the Furniture Trades Union, of Wellington, is at present on- an official visit to Masterton, , ■> Mr W, A.. Peed, who was formerly in the Bank of New South Wales at Carterton, and was transferred to Palmerston, left Wellington yesterday far Sydney. Mr Melville H. Robertson, wellknown in Carterton, and proprietor of the New Commercial Hotel, Wellington, has sold his interest in the hostel to Mr Hardcastle.
Mr W. B. Sadler, senior circuit steward, has been appointed to represent the South Wairarapa Methodist Circuit at the annual District Synod to.be held in Wellington next week. Mr G. Cruickshank, Stipendiary Magistrate at Inveroargill, has been granted twelve months leave of absence from March next. He and Mrs Oruiekshauk will make an extended tour of the world.
The Rev. A. H. Colvile, ol St. Mary's Church, New Plymouth, who visited Masterton a week or two back in connection with the consecration services; at St. Matthew's Church, has been ■ somewhat seriously ill since his return to Taranaki. His friends will be pleased to know that he is progressing towards recovery. Mr George Vesey Stewart, J.P., of Martray (Katikati). and founder of Te Puke and Katikati settlements, Completed his eighty-first year on Saturday. Mr Stewart, who is still hale and .hearty, is a native of County Tyrone, Ireland. #e is a B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, and has taken a live interest in New Zealand politics and local affairs.
A Greymouth telegram states that a very old resident of Greymouth, Mr William Holder, merchant, died yesterday. He arrived in Otago in 1862! following the gold fields there. He then came to the Coast, and founded the firm now known as Holder and Sons. He was the best known business man on the Coast, and took a prominent part jn Methodist Church affairs.
A pleasing little function took place in Knote Hall, Masterton, last evening, wjien presentations were made to Miss Kean anl Mr Thompson, , who had taken a prominent part in instructing the performers in the Shakespearian comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream." <on behalf of the church managers and choir, Mr Purcell Webb also presented Mr C. Ibbeteon with a handsome travelling rug.
The many friends of Mr and Mrs Jas. A. Robertson, formerly of Masterton, and now of Hastings, will learn with deep regret of the death of their daughter, Miss Elsie Robertson, which occurred at Hastings on Wednesday last. ; The deceased young lady, who was only 19, years of age, had been successfully operated on for appendicitis, but septic pneumonia set in, with' fatal results. The young lady was well known and highly popu-lar.-in 1 Masterton, and Mr and Mrs Robertson and family will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in t/heir sad hereayement.
