A SOCIALIST EXPERIMENT.
The appointment of Mr W. Lane to the position of editor of the Auckland Herald—which, by the way, is one of the best-conducted journals in the Dor minion—recalls a Socialistic experiment that - 'will be indelibly impressed on the pages of colonial history. It was Mr Lane, we believe, who, when a resident of South tqalia, conceived the idea of establishing a colony on communistic, or Socialistic lines. At the head of a number of families he went to Paraguay, in South America, where he founded a settlement in which there was to be an equality of opportunity, and an equal division of the proceeds of combined industry. Everything went well for a time; but human nature gradually asserted itself, jealousies sprang up, the maintenance of discipline caused grave anxiety, and the impossibility of the scheme was forced upon its promoters. The story of the communistic experiment is an interesting one, in the light of present-day aspirations, and Mr Lane, from his position as editor of the Auckland Herald, will doubtless assist in exploding some of the theories of misguided Socialists.
