FIRE IN MASTERTON.
OXFORD BOARDINGHOUSE DE- , STROYED.
At,.two o'clock this •morning a vigorous alarm was sounded on the firebell at '.the Masterton Fire Station, the cause of the alarm being an outbreak of fire at Oxford Boardinghouse, Queen-street, A jgtiff wind was blowing at the time, and the flames soon had a strong hold. By the time the brigade arrived the building was a mass of flames, with no hope of being saved. Two leads of hose were laid out and the fire was confined to the one building. The house is owned by the Hare Estate, and leased by Mr J. Cotter. With the exception of a few personal e.ects the entire contents were destroyed, the fire taking such hold that the boarders had little or no time to remove their belongings.
Mr Pyim, a boarder, was awakened by dense smoke fumes and aroused the other occupants. Constable Penson observed the flames from Queen Street and gave the alarm. . The building and furniture axe insured, but details were not available when going to press. Mm Cotter and the boarders are all heavy losers.
