INFANTILE MORTALITY.

It is a .matter for sincere congratulation! that the report of the Public Health Department shows a marked decline in the infantile mortality rate in .the Dominion. For the year 1912 the mortality (51 per 1009) was the lowest on record. It is eviderit, therefore, that the spread of knowledge by the various social organisations, the establishment of maternity homes, and the provision of qualified nurses ia having a very wholesome effect. In this connection the work of Dr Truby King, of Dunedin, deserves special mention. This distinguished medico has toured the Dominion on behalf of the infants, and has imparted information which has been invaluable to mothers. It is significant that in Dunedin, where the doctor resides, the infant mortality is the lowest' in the Dominion, namely, 38.1 per 1000. It is also encouraging to note that the general death-rate last year was the lowest on record, while the birth-rate was slightly higher than that of the previous year.
