GAMBLING AT SHOWS
Several A. and P. Associations in the north have adopted able method of raffling niotor cars, in order to add to their show takings. The president of the Hawera Association was fined £lO the other day for promoting a lottery of this kind, and proceedings are pending against another Association for having committed a similar offence. The fine of £lO, we take leave to suggest, was quite inadequate. What the Magistrate should have done was to have imposed a fine equal to the amount realised for the car, over and above its cost. Possibly, however, the nominal fine will have the desired effect. Agricultural and Pastoral Associations which knowingly break the law for the purpose of raising revenue will speedily alienate the sympathy and support of a wide section of the community.
