LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BILL.
The Legislative Council by the narrow margin of one vote, yesterday declined to affirm the principle that the Legislative Council should be elected by the people. The measure was, therefore, again killed. The attitude of the Government, in view of this .rebuff, will be awaited with interest. It is highly improbable, at this stage of the session, that an alternative measure will be brought down in the House of Representatives. The Ministry is pledged to not go back upon that pledge. And it will have no option but to make such appointments during the next few months as will ensure the will of the people being given effect to. There is every indication, therefore, that some of those gentlemen who have endeavoured to save their skins by declining to go to the people, will have ample opportunity of reflecting upon tlio nncci'tainf.i.'s of lift? in general, and of politics in particular.
