There wiU be racing at Hastings today, when the Hawke's Bay Guineas for three-year-olds and the Hastings Stakes for two-year-olds will be decided. Both events have attracted good fields. The Guineas field numbers ten, including recent winners in Merry Roe, Sir Moseley and Birkful, while Rinaldo was runner-up to Bonny Helen in the Wanganui Guineas. Merry Roe and Rinaldo should be responsible for a very interesting race. The former put up a sterling performance at Avondale, and was credited with fast time. Rinaldo finished fast at Wanganui, and may be depended upon to run a better race to-day„ The Martian-iStepfeldt colt Reputation will make his debut in the Stakes, and is reputed to be something of a champion. Mr Bidwill has also, Imagination engaged at the meeting. Both candidates were responsible for good work before leaving Rototawai. No fewer than fifteen New Zealand Clip candidates will be seen under silk at the Hastings meeting. The form ' of a number of these will be watched with interest. Bliss has been galloping over everything on the tracks- during the past week or two. The half-brother to .The Native, by Advance! iff R: Hatch's stable' is fast. developing into a, ;fine thoroughbred. He will be ready' td race by Christmas. Master Lupin, in the same stable, claims an engagement at the Opaki this month. The Sir Laddo mare Aleoto continues to cause 'her connections 1 some anxiety. She pulled up lame after work the other morning and may not be started at the local meeting.' It may be, found nepesSary to blister her v and give her a short spell. The Achillea—Sonoma, filly in the same stable has improved a lot of late, and if al| goes well may be given a run in the Maiden at Opaki. ] Sir Solo is striding out freely in his work on the local tracks, and looks better than he did some weeks back. The Sir Laddo horse will be started in the Spring Handicap at Opaki this month. His running in this event may decide whether he will fulfil his New Zealand Cup engagement or not. The nominations received for- the Masterton Club's spring meeting are rather less than those received for the same meeting last year, but on the whole are fairly satisfactory. A number of New Zealand Cup candidates are engaged; which should lend additional, interest to the fixture. Weights are due on October 6th, and acceptances close on October 10th, when entries for the Trial Stakes will also be l'eceived. As an indication that Soldiers' Chorus is thought to have a good chance in the New Zealand Cnp, it is mentioned that sevefal prominent horsemen have been looking for the mount on the son of Martian— : Grand Opera. According to present intentions, Soldiers' Chorus will "bo raced at the Dunedin and Gore meetings before coming to Riccarton. A list of winning jockeys in England, compiled up to the enS'of August, shows that Maher was leading with 73 wins, followed by Whalley 64, Wootten 63, Wfceatley 32, ♦ W. Huxley 29 and E. Huxley 26.
