MR W. J. BRYAN.

1 AND HIS LECTURING TOUR. 1 j Mr Bryan's receipts as a lecturer L and public entertainer are still claim- ' I ing more public attention than his ( achievements as Premier of the Ame- * rican Cabinet, writes the New York correspondent of a London newspaper. He spoke at Cumberland, Maryland, under the auspices of the Chautauqua Society, and received; £SO in, i cash, with one-half" of the takings above £IOO, and they were consider*, able. Reserved seats sold readily at a dollar each, and delegations were present to hire Mr Bryan's cervices a-s a lecturer if. any dates still remained open. To these he turned a deaf ear, as lie is already booked up to the limit. The title of the lecture was "The Making of a"Man," and admittedly it was worth the money Mr Bryan was introduced by Colonel John McGraw, a Democratic National committeeman from West Virginia, as "the greatest statesman since Gladstone." Speaking to interviewers at ithe close of the lecture, Mr Bryan said he was not advocating an increase of Cabinet salaries, but in his case he was obliged to meet certain fixed charges which exceeded his , salary. "Your farm is a paying proposition?" he was asked. ""It is a liability," replied Mr Bryan. "Is your .life insured?" "Yes. The pre mium's are fixed charges. Every man in public life knows that I am not delivering lectures with a view to adding to my accumulations. I am working to meet my expenses. : I cannot "expect to be a bread-winner j when the infirmities of age overtake me. I know lam right and I shall proceed accordingly."
