BOXING.
MURPHY v. CHAPMAN. .Negotiations have now been successfully concluded for the important boxing tournament which the local Boxing Association had in view for the evening of the coming Opaki races. The match .is a 15-rouud professional contest between Denny Murphy, champion of N.Z., and Pitto Chapman, of the United* States of America, for the welter-weight cham- 1 pionship of N.Z. and a purse of £SO. Murphy's record has been an unusually brilliant one during the la«t three months, and in defeating the famous Australian, Hock Keys, he can justly claim a place in the front rank of Australasian boxers. Pitto Chapman will probably prove to be one of the bustling hard-hitting type, which may upset the present champion's calculations, and the contest should produce plenty of excitement and lively boxing. The American's record is particularly good, his principal engagements resulting as follows: v. Jack Langdon (U.S.A.), won k.0., 7 rds; v. Ted Moore (London\ won k.0., 5 rds; y. Bob Whiten (Boston), won on point* in Iff rds; v. Mack Ryan (New York), won k.0., 11 rds; v. Billie Everet . (London), won on points in 15 rds; v. Les Dapney (London), won k.0., 8 rds. Pitto Chapman was only jusifc defeated on points by the famous English boxer Josephs, alter a very severe battle of 15 rounds. In addition to the above mentioned profession contest the local association is arranging three capita] amateur bouts for the first half of the programme.
