LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORM.
We hav« been awaiting with patience and anxiety an announcement by the Government of its- intentions in respect t® the reform of the system of local government. It is obvious that there will,be no time this session to deal with so important a subject. It is riot unreasonable to expect, however, that the Government will circulate a Bill towards the end of the session, so that it may be thorowgMy discussed during the recess. Local! government reform is not a matte* to be dealt with lightly.. The .system is possessed of such extensive ramifications that it requires to be handled with scrupulous, care. The tendency in recent years has been in the direction of extravagance and inefficiency. A measure is wanted' that j will place our local bodies on a more sound financial footing, enlarge thenpowers and responsibilities, and effect economy in administration. The Government has promised such a measure, and we look to it to redeem that promise at the .earliest convenient moment.
