THE GARLICK APPOINTMENT.

The report of the Committee set up to investigate the appointment of Mr Royd Garlick as Physical Instructor has completely exonerated the Hon. James Allen from the charges of patronage and persomal friendship that had been levelled at him by certain members of ihe Opposition. One would have expected that those gentlemen who made tho charges would, as honourable men, have availed themselves of tho earliest opportunity of offering the Minister an apology. It does not appear from the-debate in the House yesterday, however, that members' of the Opposition are- possessed of a full sense of their responsibilities as representatives of the people or of the gentlemanly instincts, which one expects to find in members of Parliament. The, report of the Committee, while it shows tliat the attacks of the Opposition were, in the main, unjustifiable, confirms the opinion that we expressed a/fc the outset that the Minister had made a mistake in not calling for applications for the position. The mistake is not a serious, one, however, and the Dominion is not. likely to suffer by it. 86 far as Mrs Garlickis concerned, vre are of opinion that she would be acting in the best interests of her husband and the Department if she Were to relinquish her classes in the meantime.
