A DISLOYAL MAYOR.
ATTEMPTS TO DEFEND HIMSELF (Received Last Night, 7.15 o'clock.) MELBOURNE, Sept. 17. At the Richmond Borough Council meeting, ihe Mayor (Mr Webber, M.L;A.), who recently omitted the toast of "The King'' from the toast list ai>, a public function, defended himself against the charges of disloyalty. He declared that he was being persecuted by the press "because he had the courage of His convictions. He disclaimed disloyalty, contending that similar monarchal government had .beeii expressed by the Prime Minister and other leading politicians, and they were not called to account. He realised that in his public position he had no right to force his views upon others. He would bear this in mind at future functions.
