THE COMPETITIONS.
(To the Editor,) Sir,—l gather from the'paper that the Masterton Competitions Society has resolved upon a policy of s&infiintism, and it it intends cutting down its clerical expenses very considerably. Now, Sir, lam a member of the society, and 1 have no hesitation in saying that the success of the competitions in the past has been almost entirely due to the energy and enthusiasm of the secretary—Mr W. Gillespie. If the cutting down of the secretary's salary means the losing of that gentleman's services, I should say that the time is not far distant when the society will be putting up its shutters. The society is, I believe, in a sound financial position, and this is hardly the time to talk of retrenchment.—l am, etc., ' FAIR PIY. Masterton, September 11, 1913.
