OPPOSITION LEADERSHIP.
SIR JOSEPH WARD CONGBATUr- LATED.
a strange"coincidence.
■(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. In the House of Representatives' to-night, the Hon. W. F. Massey took occasion, to congratulate the Opposition and Sir Joseph Ward on his selection as Leader of the Opposition. It was a confidence, said flie Prime Minister, that it was ten years ago that day that the late Mr Seddon ,had congratulated him on being selected leader of the Opposition. He hoped that Sir Joseph Ward would enjoy the pleasures and privileges as long as he himself had done. (Laughter).!. ' rSir Joseph Ward, who .was applauded when he rose to reply, said he was not insensible to the fact that many men holding important positions in public life had held the position he now occupied. He was encouraged to discharge his duties by the excellent spirit in which his acceptance of the offer of the Leadership had been received. He was conscious of the fact that the position he now held was a very responsible one. It was also a very difficult one, and without the forbearance and cooperation of those associated with him he could not hope to accomplish a very great deal. (Applause.)
