NEW ARMY RIFLE.

WITHDRAWN FROM SERVICE

'Times' — 'Sydney Sun' Special Cables. (Received Last Night, 7.15: o'clock.)

LONDON, Sept. 9

It is reported that the authorities intend withdrawing the new .276 army rifle. The chief fault is that the barrel generates excessive heat during a sustained and rapid fire, and becomes baked under pressure. It is beleved that a change in powder is necessary, in order to obtain the low trajectories of the best foreign armies. It is suggested that the desirability of trying automatic rifles is responsible for the withdrawal of the new rifles.
