HOUSEHOLD NOTES.
SARDINE SANDWICHES. When tea is served to members of the other sex it will be found- that a majority of them will show a preference for savoury sandwiches. Sardine sandwiches are excellent. Wipe the iifih, then bone them, and squeeze over a few drops of lemon juice. Have ready some bread and butter, put the sardines between the slices with a few leaves of watercress or mustard and cress.
A CURLING FLUID. To say that any fluid will permanently curl naturally straight hair would be untrue, but one which helps to keep the hair wavy, even when the weather is damp, consists of two ounces of borax, one drachm of gum arabic, and one quart of hot water, not boiling" water. Stir the whole together, and when tlio ingredients are dissolved stir in three tablespoonfuls of strong camphor. If the hair is damped with the fluid before the curling irons are applied,, the usefulness of the preparation will be apparent.
A STRENGTHENING LOTION FOR THE HAUL. Take of vinegar find cantharides 2 drachms, spirit of rosemary one drachm, elderflower water 8 ounces. Apply to the roots of the hair three times a week. v TO MAKE STARCH. When making hot starch soapy water should, always be used.. This gives a shine to the linen, whilst it prevents any chance of the iron sticking to the surface of the article. TO TAKE MARKS OFF POLISHED FURNITURE. Use equal parts Tsf sweet oil and methylated spirit. Rub it on in a circular direction with a piece of flannel, and give a final polish with a silk handkerchief. ! RIGHT AND WRONG SIDE OF J MATERIAL. | When making a dress of serge, in order to tell which is the right .side, hold the materia] in front of you, selvedge downwards, and see that tlve grain of the serge, goes down to the left. By doing this you can be quite sure you have the right side. Also, when pressing small tucks lay the iron on one side, and draw them across it; you will then be able to got them pressed the way you want them to go without creasing them.
