( Our Own Correspondent• •The golf match between Carterton and Masterton, to have been played, on the Taratahi links on Thursday afternoon, has been declared off, the Masterton club being unable to send a team down.
The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held on Tuesday, evening; His Worship the Mayor, Mr F. Feist, presiding. The treasurer's statement showed the gen-e-sal account dr. £755 15s 9d, and accounts amounting to £234 2s Id were passed for payment. The building inspector reported that permits for the erection of buildings amounting to ,£553 had been granted. The Gas Committee reported that during the month the works .meter registered 397,700 cubic feet. The Post and Telegraph Department wrote granting permission: to erect a gas I'amp. pu the telephone' post at Belvedere Street, Cartejton. The application of six residents of Pembroke Street, at the lower end for the gas mains to be extended to their locality, a distance of 18 chains, was referred to the Gas Committee. The' salary of the town clerk was increased by £25 per annum. The resolution of the Council re licensing lhalls, etc, and fixing fees for same/ was confirmed. The by-law will come into force on September 15, 1913. It was decided to invite applications for a general inspector under all the borough bylaws', the remuneration to be £4O per annum, and. one-third of the fees collected for dog registsratidn. Councillor Callister gave notice of motion to move at tho next meeting, "That the time has arrived when this council should seriously consider t lie advisability of undertaking the raising of a loan for the construction of an up-to-date town hall, and that a committee be set up consisting of the Mayor, Crs Roberts, Smart, Tyler and the mover, to obtain all particulars in connection therewith." A resolution was carried "That this council protests against that provision of the Municipal Corporation Bill which seeks to remove the election of the Mayor from the vote of the people to the vote of the Councillors, deeming it to be undemocratic and against the best interests of the people.''
