HIGH COMMISIONER'S CABLE.,
The High Commissioner's, cable, dated August 23rd, was as follows : Mutton.—The market is quiet. There is no change in prices. . Lamb.—The market is steady, with a better demand for heavy-weight. Canterbury two's, 5Jd per lb; heavyweight four's, 4 11-16 d; other than Canterbury 5 l-Bd. Beef.—The market is steady. There is no charige'in prices. Butter.—The market is quiet,*with a fair demand for best butters. Lower "grades receive little attention. The supply exceeds the demand. It is stated that stocks in cold stores are very' heavy. Prices are practically unchanged. Cheese.—Tlie market is firm. There is no change in prices for New Zealand and Canadian. English cheddar, per owt, 72s to 765; * lower grades, 61s to 70s. j
Hemp.—The market opened dull, and during this week was depressed, but at the close the demand was better. New Zealand, good fair grade, per ton, £3l (nominal), fair, sellers £27, buyers £26 15s j August to Octo- , her 5s more j fair current Manila £3l, 'Ai-ward shipment £3O 10s. The market remains firm. A good business has been done in yarns of all qualities.
