THE PUBLIC SERVICE.

The most important •administrative step that lias fallen to the Public Service Commissioners is to reorganise and classify the service. It would be unreasonable to expect that this could be done without creating a great deal of dissatisfaction amongst those wh«> are directly concerned. However, the task has to be performed, no matter how unpleasant it may be. When the system of Government land valuation was introduced, there was a howl throughout the country, and hundreds of appeals were made to the Assessment Court. So will it be with the Public Service. There will be hundreds of appeals on the part of those who feel they have suffered an injustice; but when the Appeal Board has dealt with them, it will probably be found that in nine cases out of tea the decision of the Commissioners will be upheld. It does not follow that because the members of the service are dissatis-| fied the work of the Commissioners m not in the best interests of the country. The time had arrived when a; clearing up was necessary, and the Commissioners have had to perform this task, irrespective>of persons. The Reform Govarnment has very properly determined that the Public Service shall exist for the good of the Community. In past years the opinion has obtained in certain quarters that the community existed for the special benefit of the Public Service.
