Hogg, of Masterton, is to be asked to deliver an address em the defence question at Petone at an early date. Mr Alex Murray, formerly of Alfredton, who now- has a farm near Levin, was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. The friends of Sir Walter Buchanan, MJP., will regret to learn that he is confined to his house in Wellington with a- severe cold.. Mrs. of Mr Wijßum Burne, <a well-known settler «f Rang*tikei, died at Feilding on Sunday, in. her thirty-sixth year Mr O'Rielly, of Lincoln Road,! Carterton, who has been on a trip to th& Old Country, is expected back about the 16th of nexi month: Mr .A. Campbell Pearee hag been elected Oouncillor for the Kahautara. Riding of the Featherston County-Council,-vice Mr Alex Hannay, resigned, •' / .- s Mi* Felx Bolton, of Woodvitte, W received a cable from his father (Mr Samuel Bolton), from London, sta£ ing that he and the family had booked their return passages by "the* N.Z. Professor Mills, who, it is understood, will be a candidate, for the Westland seat at the next general election, will shortly deliver a.series of political addresses in the district named. The Marquis of. Lincolnshire, who, as Lord Carrington, was Governor- of New South Wales, audi who was President of the British Board of Trade from 1905 to 1911, has announced his attention of retiring from public life. Messrs W. J. Welch (chairman of the Masterton County Council), H. Ryder .(chairman of the Castlepoint County Council), and J. E. Perry (chairman of the Mauriceville County Council) left Masterton for Wellington yesterday afternoon, to attend the Counties Conference.
It is stated that Mr Henry Hill, of Napier, is to be asked to contest the Hawke's Bay Seat in the Liberal Labour interest at the next election. Mr Hill opposed Mr J. Vigor Brown for the Napier seat at the last election. Mr U. S. Grant, a son of the late President Grant, of the United States, arrived in Wellington on Friday by the Aorangi from San Francisco. He is accompanied by his wife, and they intend to tour New: Zealand and Australia. Misses Nellie and Octavia Telford, who have recently been residing i#. Napier, have returned to Carterton, and are living at their mother's home in Lincoln Road. They sold their Napier business very .successfully. Mr Thos. Ronaldson, an old setiler of the Waimate district, died in the Waimate hospital on Wednesday last. Deceased was. an engineer by calling, and when he came to New Zealand forty years ago he was first employed in the Otago Daily Times printing office. In 1886 he camp to Waihao Downs, as an employee of Mr Douglas. His wife predeceased him, dying 11 years ago. The New Plymouth High School Board of Governors has from amongst a number of applicants selected Mr R. H. Rockel as English and classical master. Mr Rockel, who is not unknown iji Mastertori, passed-his degree in 1901, taking honours in Latin and English. For the last twelve months .he has been English, an<J Mathematical master at the Wellington .Technical College. He- is also a' good athlete and an old provincial representative.
