WAIRARAPA 14 v. MANAWATU 0. The Wairarapa Rugby representatives won their second match of the season on Saturday afternoon, when they proved superior to Manawatu, who went under by, 14 points to nil. The ground was very-sckldcn and prevented anything like ft. spectacular display, ami tho game was mainly confined to the forwards. In this department of the game the local men proved much superior to the visitors, who seemed rather disorganised. There were a great .many infringements during the both sides showing a strong partiality for off-side play, although a number of glaring eases in this direction were allowed to pass unnoticed. The local backs gavo anything but a bright display, but the wet ball might be said to account for much of the crude play. Tho forwards won the match, and it would seem, unless several changes are affected in the back division, that in coming matches the Wairarapa reriresentatives must depend mainly on their forwards. Tho teams wore as follow: Manawatu. Agling, Eglington, Ford, Barker,'-... Waldegrave, Phillips, Elliott, Trevena, Jolrnston, Baigent, Harkness, Frame, Bardie, McFarland, and McDonald. Wairarapa.—G. Yates, W. Darvell, S. Sievers, K. Strang, A.'Tait, Geo, Ross, F. Ball, S. Dixon, A. Golder, N. Johnson, C. McKenzie, A. Hodge, A. Desmond, D. Ross.
The visitors won the toss, and play-; ed with a strong wind to assist them.; From the kick-off the ball was wellreturnefl by Agling, D.arville. finding, the line. Soon after, the home for-; wards oroke away, and the> visitors'; fullback had to force. Manawatu, J then started at strong rush, which .Strang «E6jftpJT withr a timely mark. \ From a free-kick awarded to ' the visitors for off-side play, the local backs were called upon to defend their lino, Ball saving the situation with & good mark. Hodge and i Dixon then headed a good rush, | which just filled to end in a score. Wairarapa forwards were nowplaying up well, and kept play in their op- | ponents' twenty-five; where.several attempts to cross . the line were I stopped by -the visiting backs, of; whom Agling did good service for his side. From a scramble near the Manawatu line. Ball sent the leather to Tak, who transferred to Dar- J ville, the latter cutting in and ecoi v- •; ing ;jtheV first try under''the pests. J Mcrtensrie failed to convert. The local forwards, continued J !the:ti^per r hand, bufr infriiigeinehts -of i tlie v -rules destroyed, several"likely i chances. The visiting "backs were I then ■;responsible for a Txmfc of passing, by which, however, they gained little advantage. At this stage McFarland attempted to kick, a goal from several yards outside the halfway line, but the effort was a poor one. The Manawatu forwards then started a,good rush, which ended' in I the ball going out at the; corner flag, I Yates- having to force from the en-! Suing line-oujfc, Mcß>nzier was then j (responsible for a clever piece of worff, i which quite fooled the opposition. ! Spreading his men well out as if'he intended to kick for the side line, he dropped the ball a few yards, and picking up again, passed to Strang, I who made a good run and centred j well. The green forwards, following ! up fast, rushed over the line, where { D. Ross secured and touched down, j McKenzie easily converted. 'Wairarapa 8, Manawatu 0. Give and take play followed till the half-time j whistle sounded, the scores being un- \ altered.
On resuming, Manawatu pressed 'and kept play in their opponents' twenty-five, where a, free-kick to the latter relieved .% The visitors' half took a mark in a good position,. hut the attenpt to put the ball over the bar failed, McKenzie finding the line at half-way. The local'forwards now asserted themselves, and Golder, Johnson and Hodge carried play to the Manawatu line, where a certain score was lost through over-running' the ball. Tait secured a clever mark, which enabled Sievers .to add three pointsv,to the hom'& team's -Bcore. Wairarapa 11, Manawatu 0. McKenzie cleverly intercepted a pass, and making a good ■run, passed flo D. Ross, who raced .over, but was called back for some infringement. From the stand it seemed as if the try was affair one. Hodge, Golder, and Desmond then came through thet smra and carried the oval to the visitors' line, where D. Boss scored, the try being unconverted. . Warirarapa' : *l4, Manawatu 0. Play now become very slow" and uninteresting, with play mostly in.the Manawatu twenty-five, i A good rush by Colder and Johnson saw the ball booted over the line, but over-anxiety the part of D. Ross spoilt a certain score. Towards the | end of the game, the visitors' for-, wards set up a good rush, which all J but had the desired/ end. Sievers < saved the situation with a good line I kick. From this out, the local team ! had matters all their own way, al- j though the scores remained un- j altered. - . ■ i
The local forwards, as a whole, played up to representative form, and should give an excellent account of themselves against any forward pack. The same cannot be said-of the backs. Yates, Strang and Sievers were re-
sponsible for some good individual work, and were the pick of the rearguard. For the visitors Agling did excellent work, while Phillips, Trevena, McFarland, Elliott and Harkness were always in the thiols of it, Mr L. Armstrong was referee. MATCHES ELSEWHERE. HAWKE'S BAY 12 v. WAIRARAPA 3. f NAPIER, Last Night. ' Tho Rugby match played between Ha-wke's Bay and Wairarapa juniors this afternoon resulted in an easy win for Hawke's B by 12 points to 3. Tho ground was very slippery owing to tho recent rain, and showers fell throughout the game. Passing and other finer points of the game were quite impossible, the nature of the ground preventing anything but solid plugging. From a penalty, Ctark kicked a goal during the first few minutes of play, and thenceforth, with tho exception of a few ocoV eiona, tho game was all in favour of Hawke's Bay. Wairarapa played well in -the backs, but were outclassed in tho forwards. Golding scored an unconverted try for Wairarapa, and Anstice, Clark and Carroll tries for Hawke's Bay, none of which were converted, the slippery ground preventing successful kicking..
