MASTERTON COUNTY.
ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report of the engineer (Mr D. MoLachlan) was read at the meeting of the Master-ton County Council yesterday:— Opaki Riding.—A top decking 3inch birch has been laid on Rummer's bridge and the approach has been repaired with metal.
Temporary repairs have been effected, by means of encasing the perforated portions of two lines of pipes 16-inch and 19-inch lengths respectively with ferro-concrete. The exigency of the case has demanded this method being adopted, which, however, I would not recommend being extended for the full length of the pipes. The work has been carried out by the caretaker and assistant. Metal repairs are now being effected to weaker portions of Femyhurst and Black Creek roads.
Waingawa to Camp Road, contract No. 294, delivering 700 cub. yds. metal for repairs, has been completed and taken off the contractor's hands.
Repairs authorised have been effected to McGrath's road.
Te Whiti Riding.—Ma sterton-Wai-mata road: The renewal of 40 feet length of top decking of the Ruamahanga bridge has been carried out by the council's staff. Temporary repairs have also been effected to the southern approach of the Waingawa bridge, and it has been necessary to limit the loads to 4 tons. I would, however, point out to the council the urgency for having a driven pier of iron bark piles as the temporary work will, I fear, be unequal to the heavy spring floods, as the river is l now attacking the southern -bank. '-,',. I
So-ne urgently ■ required. ■. surface metal repairs were effected (between the Waingawa arid the borough boundary. There is still two or days' carting required which I purpose doing when the drays are available.
Somo surface repairs have been made to Rohieson's road, and two small culverts have bQen reconstructed.
Rangitumau Riding Wangaehu Read: So-ne metal repairs have been made to the weak portions of the first mile on above road. Blatchford's Road.—l have inspected the above road, and judge that 30 or 40 oub. yds. of metal.will make a sound repair. I will pat the work in hand when the council's teams are available.
Wainuioro Riding.—Glenlean Road (Gr.Gt.). —I have taken, levels for the proposed bridge on the .Glenlean )Road and are being 1 prepared; for 5w,.',./ .-'■■■. ' v';\: : -..''•■'•'..:V
V' 'Masterton-Waimata Road.—As: directed, I have prepared and let a contract for quarrying 800 cub. yards of rock. The contractors have started 'the-work.
As instructed I have inspected four old bridges north of Kahumingi. The bridges have been in existence for abouf; 36 years.•.-..■'■ No. 1, the Kahuihingi bridge, 100 ft long, composed of three stringera spans. The superstructure of the bridge which was consdered unsafe 12 years ago, was strengthened by understrut'ting the The timber on the >vhole is in a somewhat perished condition, while it may be kept intact for three or four years longer. The cost of so doing would pay interest on a new stucture. . *
No. 2, north of mile peg 13, comprises a 25-feet span. The decking and approaches are .in a dilapidated condition, and the bridge rnight be substituted by a concrete pipe and embankment at a comparatively small cost, the road being conveniently raised two feet in the dip which would minimise a nasty depression in the roadway. Approximate cost, including 2 chains of metal, £BO. Eorokoko: First crossing comprises 84ft bridge in three epans. The abutment piers to this structure are in oi very dilapidated condition, while the centre piers are somewhat sounder, giving some stability to the structure. Generally, the timber is much decayed, and would not pay to substantially, repair. No. 2 Rorokoko bridge comprises 50 feet in three spans. The main deck in this bridge is in a very decayed state. The main stringers have required temporary supports. The s«me' remarks apply in x this structure as in the last. In my opinion these bridges should be rebuilt within the next two years.
Alfredton Riding. AlfredtonWeber road: I have to report the i unsound condition of a 6in x 4in x 24ft culvert, about a mile south of Alfredton. Approximate cost of new construction, £55; The tunnelling of the waterway through the road at Saunder's flat has been put through, the men-are, now proceeding with the concreting. ■Specifications have been approved of by the Public Works Department for metalling 50 chains, more or less, of Poulson'sßoad, also the plans and specifications in connection with the grant for tlie deviation at the Devil's Elbow on . the Masterton-Waimata Road.
