MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Mas- ' tertoii Borough Council was held iast Evening, there heing presentMis the Mayor (Mr J, M. «.€oradme), and Crs. Winzenberg, ISwington, Kemball, Candy, Flanagan, Temple, and O'Leary. Leave of absence was, granted to Crs. Sellar and King. , The reports of the Park and Library Committee and Gas and Abat- '. ioir Committee 'were read and adopted. The former recommended for payment accounts amounting to £2 18s lid, and the latter accounts amounting to £721 Os Id. The report ■of. the Works and Finance Committee was read. The committee recommended that the culvert under the roadway to Chapel•Btreet be lowered, provided the own- = 'ers of the property pay one-third of the"post of thei same, tite cost hot to exceed £io. The report forwarded Jby the "gas manager and borough engineer relative to the removal of the • lamps in Queen-street was considered. The committee decided that, although the work was advisable and a good business' proposition, it could not recommend the scheme, on account of tho inability to iinance it. Accounts amounting to £2382 9s lOd were recommended for payment. —The Mayor stated that the committee was satisfied that, from a financial standpoint, it was desirable that the lamps be removed from Queenstreet. The committee could not, however,. see any .way of financing "tlfe scheme this year.—The report was adopted. On the motion of Cr. Temple, tho " matter of repairs to a street was referred to the engineer. The gas manager was instructed,

"on the motion of Cr. .Kemball, to report on "the question of extending the gas mains in High-street. _,Cr. Winzenberg drew the attention of the engineer to the condition of a portion of Church-street.—The matter was left in the hands of the engineer to deal with. The matter of a gas-lamp at the comer of Smith-street was mentioned by Cr. O'Leary, and was referred to the gas manager. "~ Cr. Kemball urged the necessity for painting the grand-stand in the park.—The matter was referred to tlie Park Committee. Cr. Flanagan: suggested an amendment of the traffic by-law, to provide that a motor car, in turning round a corner, should turn at its full length , from the footpath.—The Mayor suggested that there would be a difficulty in enforcing such a by-law. • He 'did not think it would be practicable. —No action was taken in the matter. .
