THE SMALL-POX OUTBREAK
STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. GRAVE POSITION IN THE NORTH. (By Telegraph—Prm Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Dealing in the House of Representatives this afternoon with the smallpox epidemic, the Minister of Public Health said he had received a telegram from Dr Te Rangihiroa, stating that the position in the north was becoming grave. It had been decided to send Dr Valintine north without delay. They were watching all suspects, and had isolated all cases. Instructions had been given to transport companies not to allow Maoris without permits to travel. Maoris were not allowed to travel beyond the infected areas, whether fumigated or not. There was an ample supply of lymlph. Some Natives had not been vaccinated, it having been thought fit to vaccinate those in the infected areas first. 'Many chemists were acting as publio vaccinators. The office was not confined to medical men. The Department was treating the disease as small-pox, and thought they were quite justified! in doing so, owing to the loathsome nature of the disease.
THE LATEST BULLETIN. NO FIIESH OASES IN AUCKLAND. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The following small-pox bulletin was issued this evening by the Health Department:— "Dr Monk reports that no furbher cases have been reported in Auckland City and suburbs during the past twenty-four hours. i "Four fresh cases have been, notified at Otorohanga. ''No fresh cases are reported from Kairara, near Kaihu, but amongst those already notified several are very severe. "Twenty fresh case® are reported iromj Maraaroa."
