OPPOSITION LEADER.
When Mr. Massey was in Opposition, the suggestion was made that the Leader of the Oppositoon should be paid a salary equalling that of a Minister. As we, at the time, approved the suggestion, and as the then Opposition - pres<j as a whole commended it, we take the liberty of reminding Mr Massey that he is under a moral obligation to give effect to the proposal. The Leader of the Opposition in Canada receives a salary over and above his honorarium, and we are of opinion that the Leader of the Opposition in New Zealand, who has immense national responsibilities both in and out of Parliament, should be similarly treated. At anyrate, it would come with good grace from Mr Massey, seeing that he was Leader of the Opposition when the proposal was mooted, to give the House an opportunity of .expressing its opinion on the subject. We are aware that Sir' Joseph Ward is in affiuent~eireumstances, but this is no reason why the principle should not be affirmed. The Leader of the Opposition after the next election may be a member of the Labour Party.
