Excitement was caused in •Mas-' terton yesterday morning, wben it became 'known that a man who had recently Been employed on the railway Kne in the iWairarapa-as a painter, and who had lived in a hut at the .Masterton-railway station; had developed well-defined symptpms of smallpox at Auckland; and had been admitted to the . Auckland Isolation Hospital. These facte were communicated Ito the health officers in Masterton by Dr Ghesson. v Inspector Cairns immediately instituted inquiries, He discovered, the man tad left •Masterton early in the week. .He stayed » in a hotel at WoodvilU, : and joined the Main Trunk express for Auckland at •Palirierston Ntirth.■; ■■■ ; ■''j. '.r,, "■ The hut at the Masterton railway station in which the man had lived during his stay here Was immediately fmpigated, and one ''contact'' was, isolated, Another Tian wio lived in the :• but; appears to have , gone to Pefcone. v..The Inspector-Genel alfhflii' advised those who .travelled by the Main; Trunk expresg on "Wednesday to be isolated*.* . 1 Inspector Cairns left for' Woodville by the evening train yesterday to isolate ''contacts" ift the hotel at which the man had . stayed in that town,.' So far. as can be ascertained, the painter who has developed small-pox did hot move about freely in Masterton. In view of the possibilities, however, a rush for vaccination will probably set in, and the Health Department has sent fresh supplies of lymph to Mastertpn, Pahiatua, Eketahuna, and Woodville. SCARE ATf WOODVILLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WOODVILLE, Last Night." A bit of a small-pox scare occurred here this morning. 1 A young man.' named Bernard Morgan, ,ai painter on the railway, left for Auckland ' on. Wednesday, where he 'developed the disease yesterday. .. He lived at the Commercial Hotel here for seven days, and the landlord has beeh instructed to lock up and fumigate the room." The health' officer arrives at mid-day. People are now anxious for vaccination, - but lymph is scarce. LAST NIGHT'S BULLETIN. SEVERAL FRESH CASES. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The following small-pox bulletin was issued at 5 o'clock this evening by the Health Department ' 'The t Health Officer" at Auckland reports' two cases of smallpox in the Auckland hospital district yesterday. v. : ; "There is a further outbreak at Waitara. Three deaths are reported here, but are not confirmed. V "A cage i& reported from Waikare (Kawaka way) as typical. "DrCalkwell reports three cases at Wairere antl eight cases at Taunoro, in the vicinity of Kaikoha. One fresh case is reported at Te Awamutu, also one case at Tauwhare. ' 'The District Health Officer adds that the latest accounts given by telephone and telegra-ji certainly point to the fact that the cases are assuming the more regular symptoms of the disease. "Nothing Fresh is reported in the Wellington Health District."
