THE RAILWAY DEPUTATION.
The! influential deputation waited upon the Minister of Public Works yesterday, in reference to the opening up of the East Coast of the Wairarapa by, railway, and . the deviation of the Rimutaka, has no reason to feel dissatisfied with the result •of the visit to Wellington. The Minister has definitely promised that he will have a flying survey made of the district. He did not indicate when this survey' night be expected,, but we presume that he intends that it shall be made immediately the services of his officers are available. From this survey the Minister and Parliament will be able to ascertain the most suitable route, and the probable cost. It will then be for the Government to decide whether the undertaking shall 'be a national one, or whether the responsibility for carrying it through shall be thrown upon the local bodies. We are ourselves canvinoed that the State has ai distinct obligation to open up the East Coast' territory. However, that is a subsequent consideration. In the meantime we feel that the Minister has done all that could 'be reasonably expected of him, and this district, with ths commercial interests of Wellington, will await with keen anticipation the result of the flying gur-' veyl So far as. the Rimutaka deviation is concerned, the Minister has promised that something - will be done, and we are grateful for the promise.
