The Feildmg Star of yesterday says: There pass«>B away at his farm "Bordersdde," Parawanui, last night, William Brookie, one of the-pioneers of this coast, at the ripe old age of 93 years. Mr Brookie leaves three sons (one being Mr William Brookie, < of Sandon), four daughters, and aiunierous grandchildren to mourn the loss of one of the grand old settlers who did so much to make this coast a place of residence for thousands. The funeral took place on Sunday at the Karori Cemetery, of Mrs A. A. C. Pilmer. The service at the graveside was conducted hy the Rev. A. M. Johnson. The lady was the wife of the late-Captain A. A. C. Pilmer, of the Forest Rangers. Mrs Pilmer came to New Zealand with her husband in the late 'fifties, and lived for a number of years in Dunedin, where her husband carried out some extensive reclamation works for the city. Later, Captain Pilmer removed to Wellington where he built the first Bank of New Zealand offices. Subsequently, the family removed to Western Australia, .vjhere Captain Pilmer assisted in the .building of the Coolgardie railway.) Mrs Pilmer returned to New Zealand after her husband's death. She leaves three daughters and four sons, Mr A. G. Pilmer, of Masterton, Mr W. C. Pilmer, of Gisborne, and Mr D. Pilmer, of Blenheim, being resident in New Zealand. Mr S. Tansley, Clerk of the Court at Dannevirke, has received notice of his retirement. He has been thirtyfive years in the service. A cable from London this morning records the death of the Rev., Dr. 'Rosa, a well-known Presbyterian Minister. The death is announced hy cable of George Thomas, aged 77. He was a veteran of the Fifty-Seventh Foot Regiment, and fought in the Crimea, Indian Mutiny, and Maori War. He formed one of the "Forlorn Hope," numbering 400, who werei captured at Redan. Of these, 130 were killed and 170 wounded. Of the others captured, only thirty struggled back, of whom Thomas was one.
