PRESS OPINIONS.
The methods of the Opposition have turned the country against them, which, of course, is all to the advantage of the Reform party; but we are sure that the Reformers would gladly forego that special advantage for the sake of having decency and dignity on both sides of the House. The position of the Reform party is so strong that it can easily afford to wish that it should not be made stronger at the expense of the dignity of Parliament, for which the Opposition appear to have lost all concern.—Gfcristchurch' Press. A non-party Executive, elected for three years, say, by the House of Representatives—which would soon split, up into small or large groups, for the -j purpose—would find it much easier to be careless or lazy than an Executive j which is being watched and challenged by formidable critics and kept on its j mettle all the time.—Timaru Herald. Nothing makes so much for, efficient government and legislation as.strongr • ly organised and capable opposition, ?< as was proved particularly during the Seddon regime, and it may be safely said that the best thing that can happen to the Government is to find itself faced with ah Opposition which will keep it ; right up to itself and refuse to allow any of those laxities in administration which eventually resulted to the, detriment of the Dominion and the downfall of former Governments.—Nelson Mail. The phrase "unholy alliance" is often heard but it is difficult to conceive anyignore apt use- for it than in application between Liberalism and Socialism and between Roman Catholicism and Syndicalism. If Mr Webb is elected he will owe his success to these -unnatural combinations, and of such contradiction, inconsistency, and hotch-potch of opinion is politics compounded.—Southland Times.
